Contractor Slate Technical Library

Practical field guidance on slate layout, headlap, exposure, fasteners, flashing, repair, estimating, safety, and material selection.

Field Reference for Real Slate Roofing

This contractor hub organizes the questions that affect slate performance, appearance, labor, and cost. It is a starting point—not a substitute for project documents, local codes, manufacturer or quarry guidance, engineering, or experienced field judgment.

LAYOUT AND COVERAGE

For a conventional double-lap field slate, exposure is commonly calculated as one-half of the slate length minus the required headlap: Exposure = (Slate Length − Headlap) ÷ 2. Eaves, ridges, low slopes, severe exposures, and specialty systems may require different detailing. Confirm project-specific requirements before ordering or installing.

CORE TECHNICAL TOPICS

• Slate identification, quality, color, weathering, thickness, and grading

• Pieces per square, waste factors, starter quantities, and blended layouts

• Headlap, exposure, bond, sorting, chalk lines, and coursing

• Copper or stainless fasteners, nail length, hole placement, and proper hanging

• Deck, underlayment, ventilation, flashing, valleys, hips, ridges, and penetrations

• Slate hooks, bibs, individual replacement, matching, and repair access

• Snow guards, scaffolding, roof ladders, staging, handling, and jobsite storage

FIELD PRINCIPLES

Slate should hang on its fasteners rather than being clamped tightly. Flashing must be designed for the expected service life and geometry. Underlayment is secondary protection; it does not correct poor slate layout or flashing. Avoid coatings, pressure washing, and unnecessary foot traffic.
