Choose the Right Vermont Slate
Vermont slate is not one color or one product. It is a family of natural stones with distinct colors, textures, weathering characteristics, thicknesses, and quarry ranges.
COMMON VERMONT SLATE COLORS
• Unfading and weathering greens
• Gray-green and semi-weathering gray-green
• Purple and mottled purple-and-green blends
• Vermont black
• Red slate, one of the rarest roofing colors
WEATHERING MATTERS
Some Vermont slates remain close to their installed color, while weathering varieties develop buff, tan, brown, or rust-colored tones over time. The expected percentage and degree of weathering should be understood before ordering, especially for large roofs, additions, or repairs.
MATCHING AN EXISTING ROOF
A good match considers more than color. Send clear photos and, when possible, a loose sample showing face, back, edge, thickness, nail holes, and weathered surface. Size, thickness, texture, edge character, weathering behavior, and installation pattern all affect the final appearance.
PLANNING A NEW VERMONT SLATE ROOF
Confirm roof pitch, slate size, exposure, headlap, thickness range, quantity, waste factor, starter and field requirements, flashing design, fasteners, and delivery access. Request representative samples and understand that natural variation is part of real slate.
